Are we seeing another dot-com moment? What the AI investment cycle means for telecom

Authors: Harry Aquije Ballon, Luis Ortiz Chavez
Year: 2026
Type: Article

We examine the current AI investment cycle through a financial lens — decomposing returns into earnings, valuation and dividends, and assessing leverage across the S&P 500 and the technology sector. Unlike the dot-com era, today’s surge is underpinned by real earnings growth, creating a structural opportunity for telecom operators to capture new demand and drive long-term value.

Towards better mobile quality of service: Assessing the role of regulation

Authors: Harry Aquije Ballon, Pau Castells, Kalvin Bahia, Juan Jung
Year: 2025
Type: Working paper

We find that the introduction of QoS regulations has not resulted in any measurable improvements in the performance of wireless telecommunications services. Instead, the results suggest that policymakers aiming to maximise network performance should focus on other key areas such as spectrum availability, the adoption of newer technological standards, and increased smartphone penetration.

From Physical to Digital: What does IoT mean for economic growth?

Authors: Harry Aquije Ballon, Kalvin Bahia, Pau Castells
Year: 2024
Type: Working paper

Using a global panel of countries from 2010 to 2022, we find that a 10-percentage-point increase in IoT connections per inhabitant increases GDP by 0.7% in LMICs and 0.5% in HICs. This impact is primarily driven by enterprise IoT, accounting for around 80% of the total effect, while consumer IoT contributes the remaining 20%.

Relationship between industrial anchovy fishing and artisanal fishing: Evidence from the Peruvian case

Authors: Harry Aquije Ballon, Luis Ortiz Chavez
Year: 2017
Type: Dissertation

We explore the relationship between industrial anchoveta fishing and artisanal marine landings in Peru. The results show that a 10% increase in industrial catch leads to a 1.1% decrease in artisanal landings at ports located within 50 km of an industrial port. This effect appears to be driven by the biological dependency between species, as fish targeted by artisanal fleets feed primarily on anchoveta.

Transfer pricing: Examining the gross margins

Authors: Harry Aquije Ballon, Andres Remezzano Bongiovani
Year: 2014
Type: Research paper
Organisation: Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT)

We examine the application of transfer pricing methods based on comparisons of gross profit margins. The results show that in the wholesale and retail distribution sectors there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between general costs and gross margins. This suggests that methods based on gross margins may not be appropriate for these sectors.
